The ministry at Living Word is shaped by our mission statement: Living in God's Grace, Caring for ALL People, Sharing God's Love--we are Living Word!
Living in God's Grace means being aware of God's presence among us and in the world, and seeing God's grace all around us. As such, we focus on spiritual practices, including worship, prayer, Bible study, fellowship, tithing, and service, as ways to deepen our connection with God and nurture our spirituality, so we can be good and faithful servants in the communities around us.
Caring for ALL People is a delight to us! Much of our energy and commitment to serving God's people is around two topics: alleviating hunger and working for justice and equality for GLBT persons, in the church and in the world. We are a congregation that truly welcomes and embraces families of all kinds. We walk door to door half the year to collect food for the local food pantry. We are a sponsoring congregation of the local CROP Walk. We collect food and money for the Souper Bowl of Caring. We walk in the Austin Pride Parade. We sponsor the Spiritual Pride Project, a safe camping weekend for GLBT teens. In addition, we partner with congregations on the border to provide school supplies and Christmas gifts. We donate furniture and household supplies to Austin Front Steps (services for the homeless). "We receive abundance, so we give abundantly" is a guiding principle we really live into!
Sharing God's Love is the foundation of all we do. Because we are aware of God's deep and abiding love for us, we can't keep it to ourselves. God's love is for everyone, and part of our commitment as baptized Christians is to see what God is doing in the world and join in that holy work, so that everyone will know God's love for them. Our welcome statement is a reminder to us just how deep and broad God's love is, and we hope to embody that love so it is real for those who so long to receive it.
